Alternative health therapy is becoming more accepted, often replacing conventional treatment. On the other hand, integrated therapies now have scientifically proven high quality evidences of efficacy and safety; this is usually a combination of alternative therapies and mainstream medical treatment. Alternative medicine offers an approach and combinations of other therapies to the etiology and treatment of illnesses not considered by conventional medicine. There are a whole lot of alternative therapies that are available so you will need to look around and see what you are most comfortable with. The above treatments are resorted to instead of conventional medicine with a confidence that a disease will be cured.
Quality of life and general health improves with alternative health therapies. Reducing and eliminating tension, stress, anxiety, depression and sleeplessness, causes the person to feel a sense of well-being and relaxation. The intensity of some of the side effects of traditional cancer treatment can be made more bearable, other symptoms like breathlessness, diarrhea, lack of appetite, constipation, pain and feeling sick that are greatly reduced.
Often used together with conventional medicine, alternative therapy can tend to mask pain which may hide the actual very serious underlying problem. Cancer support groups, some hospitals and hospices provide this type of therapy as part of overall care for cancer, cancer treatments like chemotherapy, radiotherapy etc. these could be free or for a small fee. Many people with cancer now use these therapies to help support themselves through cancer and its treatment. However, alternative health therapies shouldn’t be viewed as an alternative to be used instead of orthodox medicine, but it should be used as an extremely valuable support which recognized the spiritual and emotional aspects and physical aspects.
Americans for example, now spend billion annually on alternative health supplement products such as vitamins and herbs. Recent studies by Tindle, Davis, Phillips, & Eisenberg, in 2005, showed that approximately 72 million adults in the United States use complementary and alternative therapies. According to a study made by Caspi, Craig and Herman in 2005, it is observed that more than billion has been spent on therapies annually.
However there is no specific alternative health therapy that is more effective than the other, you will only be able to determine which treatment would suit you and which one is effective only by the trial and error method. Many patients suffering from MND or Motor Neuron Diseases, have found an improvement in their quality of life using individual therapies like, acupuncture, homeopathy, massage, Reiki, reflexology, aromatherapy, hypnotherapy, reflexology and meditation. It is always a good idea to consult your physician before considering any of the alternative therapies available, and it is important to double check that any additional treatment undertaken will not adversely affect any current treatment program you are on.
If you choose to integrate alternative health therapies into your treatment plan, you must discuss your choices openly, honestly and regularly with your doctor and others on your health care team. Find out where the treatment is available, at your clinic or hospital or then though the doctors own practice. Many doctors are getting convinced that complementary medicine still has its own place in the society. They would also be able to recommend specific therapies and treatments which would suit. For many people these days, alternative therapies help to cope up with stress and anxiety and making them react to conventional medicines in a better manner.
